- Scope and ContentHave had trouble with landlord. They like their present house very much. Has heard from Octavius – Marguirette has £400 or £500 left by an aunt in Scotland. He himself is pretty well employed and doing well, but with growing family it is slow work as none are able to contribute. John will be leaving school in 12 months. Received 360 saw blades and saws via 'Calcutta' and 3 other lots are to arrive. Still sanguine about gun work. Still firm in determination to drink no more; believes Oc[tavius] is total abstainer. On New Year's day, Marianne, Martele, Oc[tavius] and Marguirette visited; Marianne looks very thin and altered. On Sunday, principal gunmaker, Mr F. W. Rosier [J.W. Rosier], of Melbourne, preached in connexion with our church; 'he is the first gunmaker I I ever heard of preaching.' Will send little Emily's photograph by next mail. Iron goods are expensive; all about 15 percent dearer than 6 months ago.
