- Scope and ContentMortgage Parties: (i) Thomas Tomalin of Luton, innkeeper; (ii) Henry Gates of Luton, grocer; John Gates of Hemel Hempstead [Hertfordshire], grocer Operative Part: - (i) borrowed £300 at 5% interest from (ii) on security of (a) Property: (a) parcel of land of 354 square yards, part of Bridge Field; bounded NE [sic NW] and SW by land of Charles Mees; SE by the high road from Luton to Hitchin; NE by Cobden Street together with public house erected by (i) called The New Inn Witness: - William Medland of Dunstable, solicitor Endorsement of reconveyance of 10 August 1885 from (i) Henry Gates to (ii) George Tomalin of 71 Downham Road, Kingsland [Middlesex], gentleman and Henry Gates on repayment of principal and interest. Thomas Tomalin in his will of 27 April 1867 had made (ii) his executors and gave his wife Kitty (a) for her life. Tomalin died on 1 May 1867 and his will was proved in Northampton DPR on 7 June 1867. Kitty Tomalin died on 10 January 1880. John Gates died on 27 August 1879 and, in his will of 6 April 1877 (proved in PPR on 14 February 1880), appointed (i) as his executor Attached is a piece of paper reading: The attached Deed was damaged by Water, our Strong Room having been flooded as a result of Enemy Action on the night of Sunday, 29th December, 1940 – Lawrance, Messer & Co., 16 Coleman Street, London EC2. NOTE – The Deed Boxes reached by Water in the Strong Room were removed as soon as possible and the Deeds affected, including this Deed were opened out and dried by Electric fan Damage appears minimal.
