  • Scope and Content
The Payne Baronetcy dispute: in 1828 Peter Payne, in the course of applying for a legacy due to the youngest son and heir of Sir Gillies Payne (Glascot versus Bridges) alleged that as well as being the youngest surviving son of Sir Gillies, he was his eldest legitimate son, stating that his father and mother were not properly married untill a few months before his (Peter's) birth. This had no bearing on the case, as counsel pointed out, and Peter Payne has acquiesed in the succession of his brother Sir John (3rd bt) and after his death of his nephew Sir Charles (4th bt) without question. It was also shown for Sir Charles that Peter Payne had apparently waited until all the older members of the family who might be presumed to know the facts concerning Sir Gillies' marriage were dead before claiming the title. The dispute was not resolved, both branches claiming the title.
