Scope and Content
-- enclosing lists from Mr. Stainsby, the Duke of Grafton’s steward – ‘by which you will see that this great interest is well exerted, though not so well as it possibly might be........ Stainsby has not been so free of his liquor as he ought to have been. I have given positive directions to Stainsby to keep their mouths eternally moistened till the day of election. The Bailey who is a sensible man and understands me right has got his cue, and by his conversation I cannot but doubt but that the 18 ‘N’s will be chiefly turned into ‘H’s, and that many of the ‘K’s will change letters. As to Passenham cum Dunsanger the lists returned to me by the worthy clergyman in the parish is much more in our favour than Stainsby’s list makes it ......my lists I should have sent you before but I wait till I can make an impression upon that perverse town of Milton which I hope to have done tonight, for I sent my Bailey out with 5 guineas at 12 o’clock ordering him to return if he could make no impression........ so hope he and the whole town swim in ale........By an account from Mr. Jekyll today I can assure you that the whole town of Peterborough except two are for us and at Oundle we have forty two to thirteen. By the lists from Brackley, which you will have tomorrow the numbers are equal. I hope you will not fail dining with me on Sunday’
