  • Scope and Content
-- ‘I suppose what has given you an alarm is the six oxen that were killed last Friday to be distributed as the Duke of Bedford’s gift.I do not find it has stirred one of our men. Whatever we lose by it we are determined shall be supplied by burgesses or new freemen. We will have to find a sufficient number to make a majority. Another remonstrance must be made to Lord Ashburnham about Jo Willis who will not stir one step. We are assured from our enemies that Mr. Bartram Ashburnham has wrote to Jo Willis that he will stand between Lord Ashburnham and him and excuse his neutrality........letters sent to the pensioners are looked upon as false.....I beg we may have two more correct for these are not regarded....... I am sure we shall carry the election by more than the number of additional freemen’ January 16 1730/1 Bedford.
