The Greensand Trust is independent environmental charity that works with local communities and landowners to conserve and promote the distinctive landscape, wildlife and history of the Greensand Ridge and the wider surrounding area. Although centred on the Greensand Ridge, the Trust provides a range of services across Bedfordshire and areas of Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes. The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) awarded the Greensand Trust a grant for the sand history archive project to collate information and celebrate the history of the Leighton Buzzard Sand industry. This project recorded the stories of the sand and related industries in Leighton Buzzard and Heath and Reach, Bedfordshire, through a series of oral history interviews. As part of its work it also collected supporting research information and photographs.

While the project could make extracts of recordings available through its own website it needed another way of ensuring the long term access and survival of the material collected, which led to the deposit of copies of the material being deposited with Bedfordshire Archives in 2010.
