T Balmforth & Co was founded by Thomas Balmforth (1839-1906), who, having been apprenticed as a whitesmith in his native Huddersfield (see Z1411/1/1) had come to Luton and worked as a general engineer and experimented with bicycles before turning his attention to boiler-making. He retired two years before his death due to ill health and at that time the firm became a limited company. Thomas Balmforth died at his home in St Albans in March 1906 and was buried in Huddersfield.
