These colour photographs, taken on 20 August 1998, are the result of a shop frontage survey of Bedford High Street (Dame Alice/St Peter’s Street junction down to the Embankment) to record the condition of the pavement and lower shop fronts prior to commencement of the reconstruction of the High Street. The photographs were taken by Peter Davies for URS who were acting on behalf of the Highways Agency.
The original collection of photographs comprised 201 items (7x5 inches and in colour) but it was decided to keep just the eight photographs which showed complete shop frontages. The remainder were destroyed as they showed only pavements and just the lower two or three feet of the frontages.
