  • Scope and Content
Dear Mr Janes, By the time you receive this letter you will have arrived at Trinidad and I hope you will be enjoying much better weather than we are having here. There are several things to tell you so I had better commence right away:- 1. I have made arrangements for a copy of "The Times" (Air Mail Edition) to be sent to you each day and you should be receiving this now. 2. Since writing to you about the article for the Free Church Federal Council I have received from Mr Wigley a reply to my letter in which he says that they would like an article for the March issue of the Chronicle but if that is impossible it would still be very valuable if an article could appear in a subsequent issue. So this matter can be left until your return, if you are unable to deal with it out there. 3. There are several accounts which have been received and I presume it will be in order for these to be paid but I thought I ought to mention them to you. An account has come for Mary's board as follows:- Board for month ending 31st December 1951 £31.0.0. Account rendered £30.0.0. Total due: £61.0.0. According to the cheque book there has only been one payment to Dumfries and this on the 1st November, being the Board for October and 6 days in September. I take it that the account rendered is for the Board for November and I only query this because I have not received any account for November in the office and thought perhaps this has been dealt with of Mrs Janes' cheques. I would mention that the account is addressed to Mrs Hilda Janes. I have also received the following accounts:- South Bedfordshire Golf Club (Mrs Janes) £ 6.6.0. South Bedfordshire Golf Club (Mr Janes) £ 8.13.0. Lockharts (Coal a/c) £14.7.6. Dr Eberlie £ 5.5.0 I will pay all these accounts at the end of the month. 4. Two Christmas Cards have come for you this week, one from Mr & Mrs Wain of Canada, and the other from Mr & Mrs Reynolds at Leopoldville. 5. I am enclosing two letters which have come for you. I have acknowledged the letter from Mrs Johnston and told her you are in the West Indies. The letter from Mrs Anderson I am sending on because I thought you would like to see this. 6. Notices and papers etc are still coming in from the Town Hall, Bapist Union and BMS [Baptist Missonary Society]. There is nearly a basket full already. The Interim Report of the Transport Undertaking Committee has been received. I will keep all the papers out for your return. The Town Clerk's Department are only going to send on to you important papers and the Monthly Council Meeting papers. 7. I enclose a letter addressed to Mrs Janes. 8. A card has come from Hockliffe Street Baptist Church, Leighton Buzzard, stating "owing to the protracted illness of our minister, the Reverend E Victor Whittle, it has been necessary for us to cancel all present arrangements for the Recognition Services". I had not heard previously the Reverend Whittle was ill but thought I ought to pass this on to you. 9. A letter of thanks has come for you from Reverend G D Whitehead, Northallerton. Also a letter has come from Mrs Susie Lee thanking you for the cheque for the Exam Shield, but there is yet a further request - "When you return from your long journey, would you consider a request from the Committee to become our Treasurer". I have not answered this letter as Mrs Lee knows that you are away; I will leave it for your return. I think that is all for now, and I hope I am not bothering you unduly about these small items. With best wishes to you and Mrs Janes. Yours sincerely, Joan Smith
