“…There is no prospect of children yet & it is now above one year since I got married I begin to give up the idea of having any…I contrive to lead an idly life…I go out shooting most every day…we have been staying with my wife’s relation by the Sea side for the last 4 months. The Dutchy of Lucca is no longer a separate state. The people been not satisfied made some demonstration against the government, the Duke got frightened & gave us up to the great Duke of Tuscany…We have now a most liberal Pope & has made a great change in Italy. It was even said that 10,000 Irish men were coming to his aid if any other power attempt to molest him: for myself I do not believe anything of the kind…I will wait six months longer & if my wife gives no sign of some thing I will send her over to you. I thing (sic) you are better hand at it: I hope Mrs Swaffield will allow it-“
