    [Mentions lands in Kempston and numerous bequests] I comitt my soul in the hands of Almighty God ... - body to be buried in parish church of Kempston as near the body of my deceased father as may be - to wife Jane, three of best milk kine at her choice, and bedding and household stuff for her bedchamber Reciting that copyholds have been surrendered to use of will (lord of manor Edward Cater, surrendered by the hand of William Harvey, gentleman, and Edmund Radwell): to son Thomas Carter and to daughter Jane Carter, all copyhold lands in Kempston Gray, alias Hastingsbury, called Pennyland (annual rent 8d) to them and their heirs for ever; residue of copyhold lands to executors to be sold for payment of debts, i.e: - to executors of cousin Richard Button of Wootton, esquire, £60 - [crossed through: to loving aunt Mistriss Elizabeth Ansell, £20] - to John Carter of Bletsoe, £50 - to Thomas Woodham of Bletsoe, £50 - Mr Henry Hill of Bedford, £40 If sum insufficient to meet debts, then to be met from personal estate. Reciting that whereas 'upon the setling of my estate upon my sonne William Carter, deceased, and the Issue of his body, I did (amongst other things) except and reserve unto my selfe' two closes of pasture in Kempston called Broadleyes and Coxes Close - [crossed through: Broadleys to daughter Susan] - Coxes Close to executors to be sold [crossed through: to pay to Susan £20 and the rest for debts] to pay debts. I stand possessed of 3 acres (9 selions) arable by estimation in Kempston for the residue of a term of 1000 years by indenture dated 20 June 31 Elizabeth, and I am indebted to Henry Upwood of Southill in sum of £30 by bond, he to have land in satisfaction of debt. - to the three children of my daughter Malcott, that is Thomas, William and Ursula Malcott: £5 each at age 21, mother to have legacy of any child dying under 21 - to daughter Malcott, £5 - to every of my grandchildren, the children of my son William, deceased, that is William, Anne and Elizabeth: £13 6s 8d each at age 21 or day of marriage - to my daughter Jane, £30 - to my ancient and trusty servant Margaret Liles, annuity of 20s - to poor of Kempston, 40s - to my loving aunt Mistriss Elizabeth Ancell, to my cousin Mr Thomas Ancell, to my cousin Mistriss Mary Ancell, to my brother Ancell Carter, to my cousin George Carter son of my said brother Ancell Carter [crossed through: 20s each] a gold ring of twenty shillings to be a rememberance - to my son Thomas Carter and his heirs a tenement in Barford in tenure of Thomas Lenton which I purchased of one Pearce to be sold for payment of my debts. Residue of goods [ crossed through: I give to my son Thomas Carter] with debts and legacies discharged I give to my son Thomas Carter whom I make sole executor of my last will. My brother in law Francis Banister, Doctor in Physick, and friend Edmund Wingate of Greays Inne, esquire, and my brother Mr Ancell Carter to be the overseers thereof, to each 20s. Made [crossed through: third] seventh day of [crossed through: June] August in the [crossed through: two] and twentieth year of King Charles [crossed through: 1645] 1647. Witnesses: Elizabeth Ancell, Mary [-], Edward [?Edmund] Wingate, Edmund Radwell, Richard Hale, Thomas Lambert Codicil requesting grandchild Thomas Carter, now about 15 years of age, should choose my loving wife, his grandmother, to be his guardian, and that my wife should continue to inhabit my dwelling house in Kempston until he is 21, and that he should be allowed £30 per annum for next two years for his livelihood and education.
