    Black marble slab near pulpit - moved to aisle. ' Here lies the remains of James Hanscombe of Pirton Grange, who departed this life on 27th day of November 1731, aged 66. A man of great natural endowments especially remarkable for quickness of apprehension, solidity of judgment, and a complete knowledge in country affairs to which was joined uprightness of dealing and sincerity in friendship. He was of singular service to this neighbourhood by his impartial arbitration and composure of differences, and one of the best and most successful advocate in the cause of merit and distress, as who of so peculiar and lively a turn in conversation as gained him the esteem, not only of his intimate acquaintances, but of several persons of the highest distinction.' He married Ann, sole daughter of John and Helena Hammond of this parish by whom he had a numerous issue, where of three only survive him, Ann married to Matthew Lacy, gentleman. Mary and William. (Ann Lacy her sister Mary) buried in Shillington Church on stone slab near by. Beneath this stone are deposited the remains of William Hanscombe, gentleman, son of James Hanscombe, Esq, late of Pirton Grange in this parish who departed this life March 25 1773 having issue four sons and one daughter. Also Mary (nee Smyth) his wife who departed this life December 4 1766 in the 53rd year of her life.
