Scope and Content
Restoration of Priory Terrace. The 1830s buildings were deteriorating by the 1960s and threatened with demolition. Following a campaign by the Bedford Society to save the terrace, the site was sold by the County and Borough Councils to Kingsbury Securities (Bedford) Ltd. A restoration scheme was designed by Victor Farrar to remove later additions to the buildings and convert them to offices and flats, retaining as many period features as possible. Work began in 1972 and was completed in 1975. The first stage involved the conversion of nos. 38-48 into flats and maisonettes. The second stage involved the re-modelling of the remaining properties into modern offices, and the addition of a new block fronting Hassett Street (on the site of a former garage at 20 Bromham Road).
