Chiltern Printing Works was started by P.J. Chiltern-Hunt, opening for business on 19 July 1929 in modest premises in West Parade, Dunstable, and over the 50 years covered by the album it developed into a large and significant packaging and coatings firm. The business moved in 1933 to a vacant hat factory in High Street North, Dunstable, and then in 1936 to Clarendon Road, Watford [Hertfordshire]. As a result of military supply contracts in World War II, it acquired premises for production in Ebury Road, Watford; Headstone Lane, Harrow [Middlesex]; and Oldfield Road in Maidenhead [Berkshire] in the early 1940s (by that time the company was called Chiltern Paper Products Limited), and then in c. 1946 consolidated its entire works in a new premises at Belswains Lane, Nash Mills, Hemel Hempstead [Hertfordshire], where it continued to grow. P.J. Chiltern-Hunt was also involved in the formation of the Institute of Packaging in 1946 (now named ‘The Packaging Society’ and, since 2005, a division of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining).
