16½ acres in Felmersham which they had by grant of magister Henry de Blecchessho [Bletsoe]. Witnesses: Robert de Laundres, Nich. Atte welle, William atte [?Halle], John le Clergis, Nich. le Hunte.

Little more than the words’terminum octodecim annorum’ (apparently added in a different ink) could be read when the document was received. It was sprayed with water, and while wet put into a closed glass vessel with a little fresh Ammonium Sulphide which was allowed to vaporise; the whole document could be easily read in about ten minutes, but began to fade even while being copied. It was then sized, sprayed with lime-water to neutralise the sulphide, and flattened. In a fortnight it was again almost illegible (8 October 1936).
