Letter (3 sheets) from Wilfred Hammond, marked: BEF France.n.d [March 1917] My dear People Here is a letter to reassure you as I am painfully conscious of the fact that I have acted very poorly lately. I am, of course, quite well and am having a fine time but have been too selfish to find time to write. I can’t say very much but can tell you that I am well out of it at present. That’s perfectly honest. We have been having very hot weather for the last 10 days and spring has come up with a rush. Yesterday we had dinner in a fine little wood and all these flowers were within three yards of me and in full bloom; violets, cowslips, periwinkles, anemones, primroses, and bluebells. Some wood for a picnic! Talking about health I may say that I have rarely seen a more healthy body of men judging from their tanned skins. My own complexion, always brown and swarthy, is rapidly turning black. It’s good to feel fit and to lead an active (very) life. That feeling when the day’s work is done and one rolls oneself in one’s blanket (three “ones” – 1 blanket!) is not to be exchanged for your soft beds and “posh” nighties. Ya, Eva! I have received all the various parcels and letters and thank you for same. I liked the caramel and tarts. It may interest you to know that after my dinner yesterday I demolished a whole tart with ease. I remain yours, Wilf.
