- TitleLetter (1 sheet) from Wilfred Hammond, marked: Out of trenches Nov 18th/16 My Dear People, We are just out from the line and I am taking the opportunity of writing. I must say that you are keeping me well supplied with letters, etc. at present, particularly as all the letters that you addressed to the Y Corps Station are following me here. I received your parcel while in the trenches and perhaps you know that, valuable at all times, they (the parcels) are doubly appreciated in there, It was a fine parcel but must have been expensive. You may think sometimes that I am ungrateful but I assure you that I am properly appreciative, especially of the thought entailed. On coming out of the trenches I found a parcel containing macaroons, etc. from Gertie and two days later one from Sis containing a nice pair of gloves. Altogether, what with May’s mittens (for which many thanks) Sis’s gloves and a pair of leather sheep skin gloves that the Army serve out I look like keeping warm. The weather is fearfully cold although dry. The sort of weather one likes for civilian life but no good for campaigning. To-day we had the first fall of snow and the consequent extra cold. While up in the trenches I remember noticing a little mud flowing over the duck-boards and did hear a rumour about it being cold. I received the third series of “Bairnsfathers” cards the other day but have never had the second. Thanks very much. It may interest you to know that I received the letter with the cards in and one from Mother and May at 4;30 A.M. in the front line, (through the kindness of one of our officers) and partially read them by moonlight. On this note I will finish, Yours with love, Wilf
