Letter (3 sheets) from Wilfred Hammond, marked: France September 30th/16 Dear Mother, How goes it with you? Have just come off parade and shall probably be going in the line (censored) and will thus be in and out before you get this. I received your parcel a day or so ago and tender my thanks for same. Although the box end was smashed in, the contents were in excellent condition, in fact, one of the best. The cake, tarts, sweets, etc. were fine and the cake exceptionally so. Please send me some more like it. Have you ever sent any of those tarts before? If you have they have been so telescoped as to be unrecognisable (Good Word!). The sweets are the sort of thing that I was asking for and the peppermints were good. The chocolate was my favourite brand, too! Hope you are not fed up with praises. To-day I received your Registered letter and cash. Thanks, but I didn’t want the money. Come, come, don’t faint! By the bye, I have spoken about making an allotment to you and possibly you will have to make a statement saying how much the allowance used to be. Fancy, the ‘plane smashing in Bedford. We see some big beauties out here. I have recently had a new tunic and pair of bags and look like a member of one of the recently called-up groups. The erratic character of my writing to-day is due to the fact that I am lying on my back writing and there are two scrapping in the same tent. Finish now, With love from. Wilf
