Letter (single sheet; second part missing) from Wilfred Hammond, marked: Same address. Thursday Dear Sis & Harry I received your joint letters the other day & have now recovered from the shock of having one from Harry. I was surprised to hear that Harry had taken up Wool buying again, this year. What was the idea of the Government stopping the sale of wool. That is the Brown fellow I mentioned on the Nature Study Group, Sis. You are lucky to be having your Whitsuntide holiday this year. I had no idea, whatever, that Whitsuntide was near until someone remarked that it was Whit-Sunday. It has probably saved Mr. Downey’s “bacon” getting into a “bankers” Batt. Providing it is a bankers Batt. In anything else besides name. Personally, however, I would prefer to go the “whole hog” & get into an ordinary lot. We, you must remember, are the Arts & Crafts Battalion (See small Book) our art extending chiefly to trenching. I wish you, Harry, the best of luck with your appeal & hope you will come out alright. Poor old Kitch’s [General Kitchener was drowned on 5 June 1916] death was a nasty bump for us, as also was the first news of the Naval battle [Jutland on 31 May]. I can see that old Phillips horse wants a decent dose of Army Pattern 303. I will not answer Harry’s missile or possibly missive. Those live grenades are not ……….the rest of the letter is missing.
