Postcard from Wilfred Hammond to mother Sarah, 53, Tavistock Street, Bedford. Waterloo Station, Wednesday, 6.15 am. Dear Ma, I am now on my way to Folkestone for France. (Now, Mother, hold up and don’t worry). We had a good send-off. There was not one relation there of any chaps so you needn’t worry. We shall be at base for a month or two. We are having a lot of fun. My clothes and equipment weigh heavy. Your loving son, Wilf. Text on back reads: When down in the mouth think of Jonah –he came out all right.
