Letter,from Robert Mylne, Amwell, Herts, to Marquess: Very detailed report on damp at Luton Hoo: the house rises too high out of the ground; every effort should be made to sink it. To make a sloping surface inclined towards the building would extend the surface recieving rain water beyond the areas (5-6' broad), in some places to 18-20'. There may be 16-31'' rainfall p.a. House partly on clay, partly chalk. Too few sink-stones. Frost has dislocated & broken paving. Area walls should be arched over with brickwork. Effect of alterations on library & loggia Balcony to Lady Bute's room. Grand flight of steps useless; should be taken down.
