Prior to the formation of the Bedfordshire Local History Association in 1993 discussions about how to form an umbrella group for local history in Bedfordshire had been ongoing since at least 1989. These discussions resulted in a Bedfordshire Local History Council being formed which subsequently acted as a steering group towards the fomation of the Association. The BLHA exists as an umbrella organistion for the many local history societies and groups in Bedfordshire. It exists to raise the profile and promote local history in and around the historic county and also to support and enhance the work of its individual members, societies and groups.
Archival history
Papers prior to 1999 are from the Bedfordshire Record Office's own filing system, it having been involved in the formation of the Association and a member in the years after formation. Other papers are deposited directly by the Association itself.
