  • Scope and Content
4to account book, parchment cover, about 100 leaves. The first two sewings contain entries as for imported mercery and silk, Sept. 1648-Sept. 1649, (name, quality, principal, excise). The rest of the book is filled with 'An Account of Household expence since Mid. 1684' and runs to Sept. 1698, all the pages being closely filled with housekeeping purchases. These seem to be the accounts of a family living in London or some fair-sized town, for the purchases are constant, and the items bought include butter, eggs, pigeons, etc. Practically no place-names are given, but on the last written page but one are two references to Allesley, Warwicks., and on the last writen page there is a reference to the London - York coach. The former also has a reference to Aylesbury. On the fly-leaf: 'The age of my children on the 2nd leaf of this booke - N.Neale' The children are:- Sam. b. 1677 Sarah b. 1678 Eliz. b. 1680 Eunice b.1682 Hester b.1683 d. 1688 Hen. b.1685 Pet. b.1686 Anna Maria b.1689 Sus. b.1690 Hester b.1691 The accounts appear to be those of Noah Neale (see pedigree below), son of Peter Neale of Dean. He seems to have gone to London and become a silk merchant. There is however no proof that Noah Neale senior is the writer of the silk accounts, merely presumption. The household accounts and the family particulars seem to be those of his son Noah, who probably also lived in London. The Allesley entries seem to derive from visits to Warwickshire relations. The pedigree below is based on Landed Gentry and on Peter Neale's will (in County RecordOffice) and on the Dean register.
