- Scope and ContentRecital of surrender (out of court) of 28 November, 1767 by Sir Thos. Stanhope of Jermyn St., parish of St. James, Westminister and Edward Rudd Esq., of Biggleswade, grandson of Edward Rudd of lands as in recital of AD3077, to use of Robert Thurgood of Baldock, Herts., brewer. Recital of out of court surrender of same date by Stanhope & Rudd of - Brewhouse in Langford End, Biggleswade occupied by Francis Winn, then John Pratt, then E. Rudd. Rudd grandfather admitted to this at court of 18 & 19 October, 1731on surrender of George Norman. - Also New Pasture sheep - walk with right of common for 170 sheep & cattle, occupied by E. Rudd grandfather to use of R. Thurgood. Recital of out of court surrender of same date by Rudd grandson of - 12 a. Hitchmead in Biggleswade & Horsecroft (2acres) occupied by Rudd to use of Thurgood. Recites above 2 surrenders to be void on payment of Rudd grandson to Thurgood of £4500. Not paid, surrender absolute. Recites R. Thurgood died Jan, 1775 without being admitted. Eldest brother Thomas Thurgood his heir. After his death, heir was his eldest son Robert Thurgood. Then after latter's death his nephew, Robert Thurgood of Whethamstead, Herts., baker, eldest son & heir of John Thurgood (brother of R. Thurgood senior) of Baldock, labourer. (John died in his brother's lifetime) Admission of R. Thurgood nephew of surrenderee to lands above (see recital.) Rent: £2-14-7 1/2d.Fine: 18-2 1/2d 27 February, 1801. At same court R. Thurgood & Richard. Edmund Rudd Esq., of Harcourt Buildings, Inner Temple, London (son & heir of E. Rudd grandson) surrendered: - - 'White Hart' occupied by Rudds grandfather & grandson, then Margaret Rudd, widow, then Samuel West - -also all other lands of AD3077, & New Pasture (see recital above) to use of John Winn of Biggleswade, farmer. Others mentioned: Mary Anderson, wife of E. Rudd grandfather (Recites Winn admitted tenant for 'better Assurance' only. Recital of Common Recovery suffered by R.E. At same court. Surrender by R. Thurgood great- nephew, at direction of Isaac Hindley, executor of will of Thomas Barns (executor & trustee of will of R. Thurgood, brewer (senior)), and of R.E. Rudd, eldest son of E. Rudd grandson deceased, and M. Rudd, widow, of : - - 2 adjoining messuages -'West's House', & Malthouse, with shops, lofts, granaries etc., in High Street or Market Street, Biggleswade and 'near unto the Market Hill', occupied by E. Rudd grandson deceased. - - 3/4 acres - 2 gardens & 2 barns near Back Lane, Biggleswade bounded south by the 'protestant dissenting Meeting House Yard' etc. - - gallery for hearing Divine Service over South Isle (sic) of Biggleswade parish church - - pew of South side of middle Isle (sic MS) of Church belonging to 2 messuages (above) to use of Samuel West of Hill, parish of Old Warden, Farmer for life then to use of Elizabeth his wife.
