Letter from the Privy Council, signed by Abp. Laud & 8 others to Henry Chester as High Sheriff of Beds.; refers to instructions of Oct., 1636 (no.10); to opinion of judges as to legality of ship money; regrets ""so great an arrear"" for Bedfordshire; ""neither do we hear that you have so effectually put the writt in execution by distress and imprisonment against those who are backward or refractory in the payment as you are warranted and ought to have done... and therefore we cannot impute it to anything else but to a great slackness and remissness in you...you are to pay in the whole arrear by the end of August next"" or appear before the Council the 1st Sunday in September.
