Annual report. Mixed School: There is a marked improvement in the work generally, the written exercises being neat, accurate and intelligent, and the reading good in style, that in spite of weakness in the mental arithmetic, and want of intelligence in some of the reading, the higher grant is well earned. A good start has been made in English, and Geography is fair. The needlework garments are creditable, but improvement is required in the exercises. The offices now used by the girls and infants should be adapted for the boys: some of the desks are unsuitable for girls, for whom separate lobby accommodation is desirable. Infants’ Class: This division, which should receive the undivided attention of the teacher, is in nice order, and the children sing and drill with spirit. The object lessons on the whole are interesting and intelligent, and the Kindergarten work shows careful training. The elementary work is less satisfactory, showing weakness in the reading of the first class, and in the spelling and arithmetic. The boys’ sewing should improve. I am to enquire whether the mangers can undertake to provide a separate cloakroom for the girls. A Scott and K Whiteman recognised under Art. 68. Attached: Pro-forma from the Education Department, Whitehall, that Harold C Goodhall is engaged as pupil teacher from 1 January 1894, 13 February 1894 Enclosed: letter to the Rev R. Lang from W Baldrey, Education Department, Whitehall, enclosing the duplicate annual report, and making a few additional comments. Recommends that lads at the Evening School should work more on paper rather than slates, 23 January 1894
