- Scope and ContentWritten at Thorpe Underwood, Northampton[shire] [thick mourning border]. ...I find you did not send baby last Friday, according to your Brother’s expectations; so I want to ask you if the first opportunity you or Mrs. Wykes have of coming, or sending to this part, you will either of you call at our servant’s Mother and bring her lace pillow. I shall feel much obliged if you will. I have had two of my Sisters here, and Dora the last fortnight and it has been unusually pleasant. I have heard twice from Annie, who I think you know is at Brighton. The Doctor she has always consulted is gone to America, so she is taking advice from his partner, who tells her he thinks it will be some time before she is able to do without a Doctor, and that her heart is very weak; though there is no disease. I do hope the sea air will do much for her. Miss Bell and Miss Fifield were here last evening. Dora leaves on Saturday and my Sisters at the beginning of next week, then it will be very quiet, and I shall try to have Etta Spell for a few days. Her Mama seemed to wish it, too. I must hear what Jethro says, as she is now his little guest. I wish you lived a little nearer to us. Give my dear love to your Aunt Goff. I conclude you received the large p.o.[?] order for the collar. I hope you realized a large sum. Now I dare say you have plenty of work on hand that you have had to leave. Is not the weather wonderfully changed? The fruit is all getting ripe. I have preserved the rhubarb I brought from the Manor Farm, and some green gooseberries, and the next must be the black and red currants. My Sisters desire their kind regards. Dora joins me in love to you. With kisses to your little treasures.... Love to Mrs. Wykes. I hope her house is progressing nicely. This is a rambling note. You must excuse it under the circumstances.
