  • Scope and Content
[Likely this is the Mary Wignell who, in the 1851 census, appears to have been governess to the Wiggins' children for a time; died in late January and buried 4 February 1858 at Burton Latimer, St. Mary the Virgin. It is also just possible that this letter is from her mother, Mary, however, who was still living at the time of the 1861 census.] Written at Burton Latimer [Northamptonshire]. On the writer's poor health, 'Mr. Young called just before dinner... I think he has no suspicion of my being under Homoeopathic treatment and of course I was quiet on the subject.' Sarah better; Burton seems a noisy place after being so delightfully quiet [presumably at Mrs. Wiggins']; plans to go to Northampton tomorrow; had an invitation to dine at the Mill on Fast day but did not go; there were two services at their church; Mrs. Stokes and Mr. & Mrs. Everett came to tea and supper on Monday; have not heard from Lizzie; hopes Mrs. Wiggins has recovered her health, thinks how she must be lonely at times since Lizzie away; proposes they arrange a time for Lizzie to visit Burton; have been a prisoner the last 2 Sabbaths and fear it will be so over the winter; must be thankful for blessings that are; her pictures reached home without injury; Lizzie's is much admired here and the frames considered very suitable and neat; asks to be remembered to Alexander; p.s., will try to write to Hannah on Monday; best love to dear Mary and Jethro. George Syred[?] kindly enquired after the writer of her father.
