Not allowed to tell mother of whereabouts. Officers billeted in empty chateau, "where the only furniture is a kitchen table and some garden seats; most things are done on the floor which is always dirty."
... "We have aeroplanes over us continually & can hear the big guns in the distance. Sir John French stopped & made some encouraging remarks to us on Sunday when we were out on manoeuvre. Asks for chocolate and tobacco.
