  • Scope and Content
Is staying with Mrs Fletcher at Lyme. Has stayed longer than intended because Mrs Genest and Sophia have arrived and it is several years since writer saw them. Sophia is to dispose of her Devonshire property so that it will provide her with a "very genteel, tho' not a large income". Sophia is very like writer's brothwer, "I think her pretty, notwithstanding that sheis a good deal freckled". Has been to Honiton where Mrs Baker enquired after T.H. and Maria. Hopes Theresa enjoyed her father's visit. Writer was obliged to go to Cambridge election in February and spent pleasant 3 weeks with Miss Ward's brother. Saw Mrs Siddons 4 times and went 22 times to the theatre; saw young Roscius first night and was little pleased with him, "at the same time I am ready to allow that he is a boy of great promise - but to see him perform with men & women, & in parts to which his age & figure are very unsuitable, is to me disgusting...". Writer has spent over £100 on books in London. Mentions Ward who now has living at Sharnbrook, of one of the best families in Cambs., but was obliged to be an usher at Westminster because of the extravagance of his father
