  • Scope and Content
Writer forgot to ask what Jn. wished him to do about a commission for Hen. in militia. Writer will write to Lord Grantham on subject but feels John Should decide for or against the army, "The Militia is a sufficient occupation, is at least sufficiently a profession in mere name, to lead a young man away from any other pursuit, while on the other hand it not only lead to any object worthy of any man of talent, but, throughout every part of it, from beginning to end, is conversant with any thing but frivolities."" Saw Charles yesterday at dinner at Battersea Rise, ""From my own experience of the Law, I told him that his best course, if he meant to be useful either professionally, as a source of emolument, or indirectly, as a Country Gentleman carrying into the Magisterial character a competant knowledge of the practice of business, would be to put himself under a special pleader for at least one year; and to take chambers, and attend the Courts as a Pupel."
