  • Scope and Content
Gives account of visit to Oxford with Caroline. Unfortunately young lady caught a cold, "tho' she moved about like Esquimaux-all fur." Writer immediately made arrangments to return to Brunswick Sq. and as all coaches were full planned to go by railway. "near Harrow, the Engine slipped its girths, smashed the nearest carriage, broke the arms and legs of its conductor & finally broke away" Fortunately writer was unhurt but had to wait from 8 until 12 before another engine came. As they reached Brunswick Sq. at 2 in the morning, "I had to hammer at the door till the maids could be made aware of our arrival." Mentions some comical incidents which occured in accident. Is pleased with Mr Newman and his friends. Mentions some alterations to be made to poetry enclosed in last letter. Note: (D.N.B.) BURGON, Jn. Wm. (1813-1888) dean of Chichester, s. of Thos.
