‘Just a few lines to wish you a merry Xmas and happy new year. I am still hard at work out here under a very hot sun and working from 5.30 am to 7 pm long hours but I manage to feel very well all the same. I hope you are well and also Caroline, please wish her the Seasons Greetings from me. Have you been down to the farm lately & seen mother & Father – I hope Furzen Hall is looking well. I expect they will miss Eric he is to join me here next March. I can see a fairly good prospect to make a living & I hope by hard work to be able to get a good farm here. I hear from Mother that you are having a lot of rain. It has just started to rain here after 6 months without a drop. It never rains from April to October & then we get all the rain. We grow maize & tobacco here and also Cotton but maize & tobacco are the two best crops to grow. I hear Uncle Charlie is no better, it is very sad is it not? I suppose you have had a good crop of plums in your garden as they say plums are the only fruit that bore in England this year. Well goodbye & best love from your affectionate nephew. I wonder when I shall see you again & Furzen Hall. I often miss you all.’
