  • Scope and Content
‘I find upon looking into the figures of the above business, for the last four years, that it is really a much better concern, than at the first glance of the figures, it appears to be…A man of capital going into this business would save a large amount of present charges viz he would have to pay no bank charges, no life policy, no interest & it he understands his business and intends to work the salaries & might be reduced by quite £100 a year and the yard charges by the same amount. Another very heavy charge against the business is Roy’s horses, always four sometimes many more. They have not cost less than 10/- a week each certainly they have cost from £100 to £200 a year. I think we should get a good price for the wharf & good will, more especially as there is a stand on the London Corn Exchange which can go with the business & for which Mr Pope paid £75 for good will; which sum could be had for it again…’
