Letter from E B Lindsell to Hooper re. Cotton’s trustees and Pope.

‘I enclose draft mortgage deed for your perusal. So far as I am concerned I have no objection to advance £1700 or such further sum as having regard to your daughters interests you may think advisable. I assume that Pope is entitled to the unencumbered fee simple, but the abstract which came from your office only shows directly a title to a moiety, subject as to the entirety to a mortgage for £2000 – at the same time by recital it indicates that the other moiety was vested in Pope in 1837. Perhaps I had better put it that I shall expect the abstracted deed of Jan 1843 with the deeds recited in it to be handed over and to have proof that the mortgage of £2000 has been cleared and the premises released from the term of 1000 years, but I do not want to trouble you for further abstracts &c unless you prefer to furnish them….PS I had notice some time ago of a further charge by J J Weston to Leeds-Smith.’
