  • Scope and Content
Volume containing extracts from court rolls of Leighton Buzzard, 11 June 1394-14 June 1565 --- Extracts relate to:- leases of demesne, lease of market, entry fines, forfeitures of copyhold lands, heriots, lease of mills, debt actions over 40s., free tenants (especially the Corbet family), payment of rent, and warren. The compiler’s main concern appears to have been to collect information re payment of heriots and entry fines, especially on cottages, and on encroachments upon the warren. It is probably to be associated with Hoddesdon’s suits with his tenants over the warren. (cf.V, CH.Beds.III, 403), and with two important cases on the question of entry fines in which Hoddesdon was involved; Cary vs. Hoddesdon in Chancery, 1599, and Jackman vs. Hoddesdon in Court of Common Pleas 1592/3 (see Legal, in case Hanmer vs. Proctor, for copies of these cases.) Wooden boards; parchment; 34 ff., with index. p.iv: “B.P. serviens Mr Hoddesdon” .
