    (1) Wm Cowland, Aylesbury Street, St. James Clerkenwell, Middlesex, brazier (2) Thos Greenwood, Fenchurch Street, London, upholsterer, Wm Marriott, junior, City Road, St Mary Islington, Middlesex, stockbroker, Jn Humphrey, Harpenden, Herts., strawhat manufacturer, Rich Partridge, junior, Leagrave, Beds., farmer. ... recites lease and release 1st and 2nd April 1779 between (i) Wm Cole, Luton, esq [since decd] and (ii) Jn Duples, Chas Greenwood, Wm Cowland, Chas Wheeler, Jn Folgham --- 2 cottages with appurtenances in Church St., Luton with the building 'lately erected' by Wm Cole in the yard belonging to the cottages 'as and for a Preaching House'. Upon trust paying the rents to Wm Cole for life; on his death rents to Eliz Cole his wife [since decd]; on her death rents to Ann wife of Tomkinson Cooper of Luton; on her death to John Wesley, clerk, 'and such other persons as he should during his life appoint ... might in the said house .... preach and expound God's Holy Word'; on death of Jn Wesley to Chas Wesley, clerk, with same provisos; on death of Chas Wesley to the 'yearly Conference of the people called Methodists in London, Bristol or Leeds for the aforesaid purposes, subject to a proviso that such persons should preach 'no other doctrine in the said House than was contained in the said John Wesley's Notes upon the New Testament and his four volumes of Sermons'. ... And by indenture of 3rd Oct 1780 made between (i) and (ii) for making a perpetual annual provision of £10 10s 'for the benefit of the preacher of the said Preaching House' subject to restrictions before expressed and in consideration of 5/- paid by (ii) to (i), (i) grants to (ii) a yearly rent charge of £10 10s issuing out of a freehold messuage called Crutchmer in Offley, Herts. with land adjoining, i.e. Home Close cont 3 acs; close called Eight Acre Close adjoining Home Close cont 5 acs; half close containing 3½ acs adj Home Close; close of pasture called Hempland cont lac; close adj called Little Field cont 5acs; close called Hare Field Close cont 6 acs adj the land late of Chas Robertson. All which premises were formerly in the occupation of Sar Impey, wid and then of Thos Godfrey alias Cooper, on trust that (ii) should pay the the yearly rent charge to the 'Assistant Preacher ... belonging to ... John Wesley's Society .... appointed at the Yearly Conference ... to officiate and preach in the Luton part of the Bedfordshire Circuit ... in order ... that the same might be applied towards the maintenance of the Preacher ... officiating at the Preaching House in Luton ... erected and endowed' by (i) with same conditions as to doctrine as stated above. If preaching should be discontinued at the preaching house for seven consecutive calendar months then the rentcharge to be for the use and benefit of the Vicar of Sundon, Beds., and his successors forever. Trustees to appoint replacements when their fellow trustees die or cease to be Members of the Methodist Society; number to be kept up to five and the rentcharge conveyed to the new trustees. The said Jn Duples, Chas Greenwood, Chas Wheeler and Jn Folgham having 'long since departed this life' (1) has chosen (2) as new trustees and in consideration of 5/- paid by (2) to (1), (1) grants to (2) the yearly rent charge of £10 10s issuing from the messuage and lands described at Offley, now in the occupation of Wm Oakley to the use of (1) and (2).
