  • Scope and Content
Petition from the occupiers of land in Husborn Crawley to the Duke regarding roundsmen - blames the employers for not taking their proper share of the available labour. The parish vestry meeting has often unanimously agreed to take their proportion but "have as often been frustrated in the design, by the obstinacy and prevarication of one individual, who has been a Plague to the Parish for many Years, and progressively so, as he increased in Wealth". They reluctantly appeal "as the only practical remedy as it regards the conduct of one of Your Graces tenants Thomas Turney, who has bid defiance to all Rules and regulations made by himself or that of the Parish. We disclaim any Motives of Animosity or grudge towards Mr Turney". They have attempted to persuade him; he attended the vestry meetings and consented to the measures and signed "to the due performance thereof". Ask his Grace to "adopt such Measures as may deem expedient for the better regulation of the Parish", 1822; statement of produce from Crawley Kiln, 1821 - 23; estimate for field gate, 1825; inventory of effects of late John Goodman of Dunstable, 1826; letter from John Bonis of Paddington - has examined land at Woburn and in "various parts of the Field" found good earth for "making Stock bricks that will stand any weather". The "Breeze and Ashes" required will have to be sent from Paddington to Fenny Stratford by water and then carted to the field where the bricks are to be made. His price for manufacturing them on the spot is 45/- per thousand, he paying the duty - the brick account to be taken by the exciseman and the number made by the moulder. The Duke has agreed "to find boards rough Timber for Hack Houses & Sheds & faggots for lighting Kilns also white sand as much as may be wanted likewise water there is a Pond in the Field if it will contain sufficient", 1827: estimates for painting and gilding rooms at Woburn Abbey, William Thomas, 1825, Edward Millard, 1826.
