Exemplification by the Custodes Libertatis Anglie of a decree by Mr Baron Denham appointed by the Treasurer to consider the petition of John Collop of Flitwick, complaining that he is deprived by one Hewett, farmer of Flitwick Woods, of the right to take conies throughout the King's manor & to take from the woods two loads of thorns for fencing the Conygreefeild close, all of which he holds by copy of court roll as did his ancestors.

  • Scope and Content
The evidence included the admission of Reginald, grandfather of John Collop, to the premises by copy of court roll 1531/32, the Ministers' Account of 1543/44 when the manor was annexed to the Honour of Ampthill, & a record of the Treasurers' Remembrancer in 1622 emboying the decree. In 1570/71 the wood was farmed to Robert Thorpe for 21 years, but Reginald & John Collop continued to enjoy their rights, as appeared by a court of survey in 1614/15; in 1583/84 the lease of the wood was renewed for lives except for 6 acres included in Steppingley Park, which has been the farmer's excuse for denying Collopp's rights to conies & thorns for 30 years. The rights are restored by the decree. Endorsed by George Brooks as of the 'Warren Farm or Old Farm', & with the fee farm rent.
  • Seal: Great Seal of the commonwealth, badly broken; repaired with wac and steel wire in 1936, but apparently the reverse had been treated with hot iron at an earlier date.
