- Scope and Contentasking advice about her sister’s tenant at Ivy cottage. ‘William Smith a market gardener, was tenant for over 30 years and paid his rent regularly £30 annually, £15 at Lady Day and Michaelmas – he died last April leaving a widowed daughter and her child in the house, she having kept her Father’s house for many years. She has known for some time past that she would not have the house after her fathers death and about 3 months ago I wrote for my sister and told her so and the place was let to another person. Mrs Hillyard now refuses to leave and appears to be a little troublesome. She tells me the house was taken from old Michaelmas … Mrs H seems to think she cannot leave until proper notice has been given, if that is the case would you kindly do so before the 11th…there are 1 or 2 barns her father built, I suppose she can remove them, if not taken by the next tenant, as well as the grates he put in…
