- Scope and ContentReads- Conversation with Tavistock about the Cople fire. He does not think rewards have effect, nor do I, but in this case it may do. When writing to Haedy Friday. I did not know that an attempt was making at Platt's - fortunately seen as it was breaking out; straw was damp & night wet, it never blazed much; the Ampthill engine arrived, excellent pond, got under without damage. Revengeful & malicious spirit in minds of some labourers; but the generality evinced anxiety both at Cople & Lidlington. We must now decide on best division of Cople land after Lord Ludlow - much depends on whether future occupier would want to farm so much. Possibility of local mutual protection societies. Two years ago when there was malicious maiming of horses & cattle near Ampthill a Society was formed, & from their vigilance I think it has effected some good.
