  • Scope and Content
Reads- Fire between 12 & 1 a.m. at Robinson's farm (late steward to McQueen) at Wootton Keely; not much damage (barn & hovel). Vestry at Flitwick. Bennett & I went (Tween at Dunstable). It is astonishing the notions the farmers entertain. We were there 2-5 explaining necessity of employment & wages; most men in employ have wages made up out of rates; 18 men on the roads paid 3-5s.week.; many single farm-labourers are paid no better; the worst-managed parish I have yet looked into; we allotted the men & settled the lowest wages at 10s.week; think they will abide by it. I agreed to take on 3. Monday's meeting (R3/3571) entirely concerted by the roundsmen because their wages had not been raised on the Saturday night. I am sure they will be quiet if they have work & proper wages. Holland has got 38 of the sticks they threw down. Have just been out - appearance of another fire in Brogborough direction, very indistinct, disappeared before I came in.
