Crawley vestry: farmers induced to agree to an allotment of the men & boys out of employ, to find them employment during winter & give them 10s. wk.; now only 5 men on parish, who are not efficient labourers & will be employed on the roads. A few complained of the present rate of wages, most of them in your employment in the wood; they have 11s. week out of which they find their tools; they cannot earn much more at this time of year, but in the spring and bark season they make 16-18s. week & more. Some relief afforded to those with large families.
