Reads- Swanborough & Crawley. Ridgmont farmers have agreed to take on more men. At Woburn only 4 old men on parish, but now 7 turned off from the farms. The lowest wages are 9s.-10s.; most have 11s.; the great evil is that most spend so much at public houses. When I settled with 4 men at Ridgmont stonepit at 1/8 per day, upward of £9, they confessed more than that sum was owing for beer. Increased night lookout lately. Wood account.
