- TitleLetter mainly regarding storage and freight of stone for building work
- Date free text15 Jan 1830
- Production dateFrom: 1830 To: 1830
- Scope and ContentReads- Had a cold; could not get to Leighton or Fenny to go into the question of wharfage & cartage of Bath stone; but I think we can't get it from Mr. Wing for anything like the price Blore will. Cost at Leighton & Fenny for heavy goods, not hazardous, has always been in my day 10s. per ton for wharfage & cartage to Woburn; for light goods 11s.8d. per ton. I believe Grant & Lawford's is the only one that has a crane sufficiently strong; and when Wing had his stone landed at Harris & Andrew's wharf, Fenny Stratford, they were obliged to cut some of the largest blocks; they broke the crane, & were obliged to borrow the triangles from the store to land the largest. Wing has about 600-700' of stone left over from Woburn church tower. Shall I make the best bargain I can with him? I enclose bill from Hurley - seems excessive; I previously tried to get a price-list from him; all ordered by Roote; compare the prices charged by Rownson & Drew - about 100% difference. Transmission to Child. Castleden's salary.
