Mary Smith - part of her statement. Is 59.Married Joseph Staples when aged 19 and had two children by him, one born about ½ a year after marriage and the second child born at Leicester. The first child died between 5 and 6 years of age. Staples enlisted in the Leicestershire Rangers (then newly raised) and was "gone abroad about 2 or 3 years". The first child was between 4 or 5 when he left. His habitation was at Anstey, Leics. About 18 or 19 years since, Thomas Staples, brother of Joseph, came up to get Mary to go down for the purpose of getting rid of a woman and family whom Mary's husband had cohabited with.
