- Scope and ContentWe have been electioneering mad here for these 2 weeks past, & scarcely able to keep one's thoughts upon anything beside; I shall be glad when it is over, and I hope it will terminate successfully for Sir Peter Payne. Stuart's party seem to have no doubt of him being elected; they are making great exertions & spare no expense. On our side, from all accounts & from what comes from my own knowledge, I think we gain ground and converts daily, still I am not over-sanguine. Where so much money is spent (and here it is actually squandered) the influence upon the ignorant, which is the majority, must be very considerable. Lord Charles Russell acquitted himself nobly yesterday; he spoke well and to the purpose. I am sure he will do credit in a short time even to the name of Russell. His language was not studied but free & noble. He is certain to head the poll.
