    Cornelius Gurney (popularly known as Neil Gurney) was born at Everton, Beds. on 23 May 1890 (Z 1338/1/4), a son of James Gurney, a market gardener, and his wife Sarah (Z 1338/2/4). He worked as a baker at Everton (Z 1338/1/1), serving in the Army Service Corps during the First World War (Z 1338/3/1-2), until his first wife, Florence, died in 1944 (Z 1338/1/2). By the time he re-married (Ethel Violet Smith in 1947, see Z 1338/1/3) he was living in Enfield, where he remained until his death on 22 June 1970 (Z 1338/1/4).
