- TitleCorrespondence from Goodhall, Wellingborough, to TP Brown: Details of Gell's understanding of conditions for land purchase
- Date free text12 Sept 1814
- Production dateFrom: 1814 To: 1814
- Scope and ContentReads- Awaiting news of agreement between Adam & Gell about £500 to be paid to Gell for Duke: impossible to settle with Lord St.John without understanding this contract. Gell thought conditions were: 1. as he had accommodated Duke with purchase-money of farm of 84 a. (£3,680) for years on his bond, that he might not sustain the loss of selling out of the funds at 48 & losing opportunity to buy in advantageous period; 2. his having expended more than £1,400 on drainage; 3. his agreeing to quit whole farm at Michaelmas. But did not suppose he would lose right as regards Lord St.John & incoming tenant. Now holds of Duke: 150 a. under agreement 84 a. & 22 a., & Peacock's close (9 a.) As to former under his agreement, and as to latter according to custom of country, entitled to be paid for his crops by incoming tenant. Willing to arbitrate; but Lord St.John not. Question of Gell's ploughing 3 grass closes: arbitrator said Lord St.John should pay Gell £220; Lord St.John now claims this sum was in lieu of all claims.
