Archival history
No accession numbers were included on the old list, and the symbols + and * in the margin have been used in the typed catalogue to differentiate between the records from the Relieving Officer's Office and the Public Assistance Institute respectively. These symbols are also used for the Highway and Lighting and Watching committee rate books (P 85/23/1-2)
The surviving rate books for Luton have come from three different sources, namely from William Austin of Luton, the Luton Board of Guardians (Relieving Officer's office), the Luton Board of Guardians (Public Assistant Institution). They were originally given "double numbers", but as this caused unnecessary confusion the following list has been retyped from the original giving only the actual reference numbers which should be used in ordering the documents.
